The research firm NPD reported that iOS has grabbed significant share from Android in the U.S. smartphone market.

This report states that iOS sales jumped from 26% in the third quarter to 43% by October and November. On the other hand, Android market share is moving down from 60% in Q3 to 47% during those two months. Therefore, iOS and Android are still dominating the U.S. smartphone market, while Android managed to stay at the top position.

“Apple and Android distanced themselves from the competition in 2011, turning the OS battle into a 2-horse race,” said NPD in the report. Apart from Android and iOS, RIM is the third most popular platform, but its share has come down from 8% to 6%. iPhone 4S is the top selling smartphone in the U.S., while iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS are in second and third positions respectively.

Samsung Galaxy S 4G and Samsung Galaxy S II are the top selling Android devices in the U.S., reports NPD.
