Finally Facebook has beaten Google to become the most popular site in U.S. The study of two web track firms confirmed this.

According to Experian Hitwise, Facebook accounted for 8.93 percent of all U.S. website visits in 2010, ahead of Google’s 7.19 percent. With 3.52 percent Yahoo Mail got the third place, while yahoo.com remained on the fourth spot with 3.30 percent of visits.  Last year Facebook held third place, behind Google and Mail Yahoo.

This survey also highlights the fact that social networking too, is heavily dependent on search. ‘Facebook’ was also the top searched term, while ‘facebook login’ got the second place. The top ten list of of searched terms also has “facebook.com” and “www.facebook.com”

The rise of Facebook was also confirmed by another independent survey by ComScore. “Facebook is on track in 2010 to surpass Google for the first time in number of pages viewed. Each unique visit to a site can result in multiple page views”, the study says.

According to Lou Kerner, former chief executive of Bolt.com, “this is the most transformational shift in the history of the Internet”.  “We’re moving from a Google-centric Web to a people-centric Web,” he said.
