Within 2 hours of reports popping up on the web that the notorious Osama Bin Laden had been killed both Facebook and Twitter went crazy. A Facebook page titled “Osama Bin Laden is DEAD” has already received more than 150,000 likes. But the page was set well ahead of this news release saying that Osama was killed a long time ago.

On Twitter Keith Urbanh, the of Staff for former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Navy Reserve intel officer, tweeted

“I’m told by a reputable person they have killed Osama Bin Laden”

But he also quickly added,

“Don’t know if it’s true, but let’s pray it is.”

The news reached Twitter even before the president’s broadcast. CNN’s Steve Brusk tweeted that the announcement by the president was related to national security. These tweets  received  many retweets  filled with excitement and soon Twitter was getting crowded with 4000 tweets per second. One Twitter user, Sohaib Athar from Abottabad, where the Al-Qaida leader was found and killed, accidentally live-tweeted the operation by the US army to capture Osama and he has become famous overnight. Yet he did not react to his overnight fame.

“I am JUST a tweeter, awake at the time of the crash. Not many twitter users in Abbottabad, these guys are more into facebook. That’s all.”

The announcement came just after 9.45 p.m. Sunday from Dan Pfeiffer, the communications director for the White House tweeting that the president of United States will address the nation tonight at 10.45 p.m EST. The television anchors and newspaper editors did not know, at first, that the President would be announcing the death of Osama bin Laden which is an outstanding development in almost a decade long war against terrorism. The reporters in Washington suspected almost immediately that the announcement could be about the Al-Qaida leader. The news was not aired right away but was out in Twitter and Facebook.  Mr.Obama confirmed the death of Osama Bin Laden at 11.35 p.m. Al Jazeera the English network showed live pictures of an excited crowd shouting “USA! USA!” Not only the Americans but people from all over the country seeking world peace are happy hearing the news.

According to the NBC correspondent Richard Engel,

“This ends a chapter in the global war on terrorism which has defined a generation,”

Yes, it does without a doubt!
