According to a comScore report on mobile measurement, Instagram has gathered a greater number of users than Twitter for the first time.

It seems to make sense why users spend more time with Instagram than Twitter. Instagram is a free photo-sharing program and social network that enables users to take photos, apply digital filters to them, and then share them with other Instagram users through social networking services. Twitter’s stream, on the other hand, is composed only of text-based messages, with some embedded photos, videos and links out to other websites. In a way, Twitter is designed to make it easier for users to traverse through the stream, stopping at text or pictures as they like.

Twitter considers the reason for most of this success to be the mobile nature of the company’s core product. As of June 7, 2012 60 percent of Twitter’s active users access the service via a mobile device. This mobile nature of Twitter has increased the overall engagement between users and tweets, making people more likely to click on its ad products.

According to comScore, bringing users back more often on a daily basis and keeping them engaged for longer is Instagram’s key strength. Now the pressure is on Facebook, to create mobile advertising products to reach out to the users who visit the site more often.
