Facebook Apps Can Access Contact Information of UsersDCI
Facebook has announced that it will allow application developers to request access to users’ contact informations including mobile phone number and address.
In a blog post, Jeff Brown, a member of Facebook’s developer support team, said that users’ contact informations like home addresses, mobile phone numbers etc., could be requested and collected by application developers on the developers platform.
Even though the users would have to grant permission to the app to access their personal information, this feature is already drawing criticism from privacy advocates and security experts. They have pointed out that, with all those collected information, the developers can use them for spam or cold calling.
The comments for this blog are also mostly negative. Many negative responses are from developers. They advise users to remove their phone number and address data from the website. Facebook apps can already able to request certain bits of informations including name, gender, list of friends, email address etc.,
